Are Writing Retreats Worth It?

Posted by on Sep 5, 2015 in General

We’ve all heard musings about writing retreats. The creativity. The inspiration. The getaway. The productivity. And with so many varieties of writing retreats and residencies, it can be overwhelming to decide if one is right for you.

We decided to look at the pros and cons of writing retreats, so you can decide for yourself.

Pros:

-You will write more than you ever thought possible. Seriously.

-Some retreats/residencies offer an escape from laundry, dishes, cooking and more, giving more time to focus on work.

-You will connect with others in the ‘biz.’ Even if just by email with the person who battered away at the computer before you.

-Education. Some retreats offer mentoring or workshopping with peers, highlighting new elements of form and showcasing new skills.

Cons:

-Away from family. (This could also be a pro, depending on how you look at it…)

-Cost. (But you can always apply for grants, sell lemonade at the end of your driveway or beg)

Ultimately, where you write doesn’t matter. It’s the words on the page that count. But it’s been our experience that residencies are productive, magical and necessary!
